CHIROPRACTIC

What does a chiropractic treatment for your horse entail?

Chiropractic therapy is an effective form of preventive medicine as well as a treatment.
It works on improving posture and body mobility by improving proprioception and biomechanics, realigning the body, and increasing neuro-muscular function.

Advantages

Improves sporting performance
Improves movement quality
Injury prevention
Postural realignment

Which horses does it benefit?

It is beneficial to all horses! Ideal for horses competing in a wide variety of disciplines, from show jumping and dressage, to eventing and endurance.

More specifically, chiropractic treatments for competition horses help to:
  • Improve proprioception, balance and coordination
  • Improve musculoskeletal mobility\flexibility
  • Increase impulsion, improving its propagation
  • Improve athletic performance
  • Release any areas of muscular tension due to the immobility of a joint segment.

Chiropractic treatment is also a sound practice that can improve the welfare of non-competition horses of all breeds and ages.

When to treat and when not to treat

It is essential to treat horses that are NOT affected by lameness and are not undergoing post-injury rehabilitation, as treatment would be ineffective in resolving any compensations caused by the ongoing disorder.
Chiropractic treatment should not be seen as a solution for chronic lameness.

In competition horses, the FIRST treatment is recommended at least 5-7 days before the event so that the animal can reap its full benefits.

Other situations in which chiropractic treatment can be considered are, for example:
  • Abnormal gait
  • Pelvic asymmetry (sacroiliac joint dysfunction)
  • Back or neck pain
  • Problems with collection
  • Problems with impetus
  • Difficulty in flexion
  • Stiffness
  • Reluctance to work
  • Behavioral disorders (various defense mechanisms)

How often should treatment be given?

The duration and number of treatments required are subjective and vary depending on the horse’s problem and response to the treatment.
